When Do I Need a Pilot Car or Escort Vehicle for My Florida Shipment?

  • Width:
    • • Over 12 feet: 1 pilot car or escort vehicle required.
    • • Over 14 feet: 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles required.
    • • Exceeding 15 feet: Police escort and a minimum of 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles may be required.

  • Length:
    • • Over 95 feet: 1 rear pilot car required.
    • • Overhang exceeding 20 feet past the center of the rear axle may require 1 pilot car.

  • Height:
    • • Over 14 feet 6 inches: 1 escort vehicle required.
    • • Over 16 feet: 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles required.

Oversized Load Banner Regulations:

  • "OVERSIZE LOAD" signs are mandatory for all oversized loads to be displayed at the front and back of the vehicle.
  • Size: 7 feet long, 18 inches high.
  • Background: Yellow.
  • Letters: 12 inches high and 1.5-inch stroke.

Flag Requirements:

  • Flags are obligatory for all oversized loads.
  • Flags must be clean, either red or fluorescent orange, and at least 12 inches square.
  • On permitted vehicles, flags should be positioned to wave freely on all four corners of over-width loads and at the extreme ends of any protrusions, projections, or overhangs.

Warning Lights: Color and Placement:

  • A rotating, strobe, or flashing amber light, visible for 500 feet, must be mounted on the vehicle to alert approaching traffic of potential safety hazards.

Travel Time Restrictions for Overdimensional and Overweight Loads in Florida

  • Travel is allowed from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
  • Saturday travel (possibly Sunday) is permitted from half an hour before sunrise until noon if the load is under 14 feet wide and under 14 feet 6 inches tall.
  • Request "weekend travel" when applying for a permit; however, it's not allowed on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.
